These are the men at helm:

President: Adam
Vice President (M): Shazli
Vice President (F): Kauthar
Treasurer: Don
Secretary: Imran
Academic Excos: Hazwan Ariff and ‘Aqilah
Sports Excos: Zul and Snoopy
Food Excos: Arvindd and Farhana
Welfare Excos: Naili and Azrieal
Religious Excos: Badrul Hisyam and Faezah

There were some issues about the SC. The so called ‘liberals’ in the college believe that the SC is dominated by MUSCOM people and it is not fair for them. WTF?? It’s not like the college is a big community or anything for it to be segregated to two factions. Just live happily with each other. Sheesh!!

From the observation that I made for several years, I have come to a conclusion that as the years gone by, the new generation in the college will be more and more ambitious and arrogant. This is a theory supported by our beloved teachers. Instead of 3 a level subjects in our time back then, now they want to take 5. Soon, there will be people taking 7, or 10 a level subjects.

That’s all for today folks. Saje bosan2 nak update blog. Hehehe. The founding President was Shahrul Mizan Md. Salleh, who was previously the founding President of the KMYS Student Council. AKMATYS was established to promote networking among the students of the college, which was established in 1998, and had its first graduates in the year 2000. The graduates furthered their studies in Malaysia, the UK, Ireland, the US and Australia, among other countries.

In the first year, AKMATYS organised a Ramadhan 'iftar' or breaking of fast in Malaysia Hall London, as well as the traditional Alumni Konvoi. The Konvoi is when former students return to the college to interact with present students, as well as meet up old friends, teachers and staff. Another iftar was organised at the end of 2002, again, in Malaysia Hall London. AKMATYS too supported the sports teams during several student games in the UK.

In summer 2003, the bulk of the founding members of AKMATYS graduated. During the AGM held in the middle of the Konvoi, a new committee was selected, consisting of the 2001 and 2002 graduates of KMYS. The new President was Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad. A separate Malaysian subcommittee was formed to explore the possibility of registering the society. Their work however had to wait for the new name of the college.

Breaking from tradition, the new committee had an AKMATYS 'Makan' event organised in Mawar Restaurant, London, in January 2004 which saw nearly 60 students from the class of 2001, 2002, 2003 and even a present student (who was in the UK for an interview) attending the luncheon. AKMATYS also sponsored two pages in the class of 2004 yearbook, both as a sign of support as well as promoting AKMATYS to the future graduates of KMYS.

In summer 2004, again the AGM took place during the Konvoi. The bulk of the committee changed, mostly with the graduates from the class of 2003. Nik Nazmi however remained as President. The AGM, by two thirds majority ratified an amendment in the Constitution which established Alumni Kolej Yayasan UEM (or AKYUEM) as the new name of the organisation. The President also made a challenge to the future leadership of AKYUEM to make AKYUEM just as good and as strong as the more established ex-student associations within the next ten years. In October 2004, akyuem.org was launched.

The committee changed hands in the AGM in 2005. Mohd Ikmal Hisham Zulkarnain was elected as the new President. All the new committee members were from the 2004 batch. The Rog Cup, an inter-batch football tournament was introduced during the Alumni Konvoi. The inaugural event was won by the 2nd Batch. This tournament will be an annual event starting from 2005.

The year 2006 will be a very interesting year. With the new highly spirited committee, we are hoping that AKYUEM can reach new heights since its formation. AKYUEM will hold the largest gathering ever in the UK. The event, named AKYUEM Festival will be held in Southampton on the 1st of April 2006. This year will also be the year that AKYUEM finally fulfill its target of publishing a magazine. Although we will only be able to publish only one for this year, it is hoped that this effort will be continuous in the future.

At such a young age, it is undoubted that AKYUEM has achieved a lot. It has provided a platform for networking and participation among its members, and has an optimistic vision for the future, where the number of graduating students from KYUEM increases.

Want one?

Impressed? I still remember when everybody wanted to go to L** and W*****k, because these two universities ‘supposedly’ have higher place in the accounting universities rankings. Well, I just want to say, ‘always believe the facts, not the rumors’. It seems that the fact sided with Lancaster University.

FT ranks LUMS in world top ten for accountancy

LUMS has been ranked 10th in the world in a category called 'Best Schools for Accountancy' in the Financial Times 2006 ranking of the top 100 global MBA programmes. All the other top ten schools are in the USA, making LUMS the highest ranked European business school for Accountancy. The ranking is based on MBA alumni recommendations regarding the quality of teaching and learning on the programme. That our MBA alumni thought so highly of their Accountancy modules is indicative of the strength in depth of LUMS' academic staff. Faculty who have taught accountancy on the MBA over the last few years include David Murphy, Steve Young and David Otley. However, the AKYUEM Committee would like to thank everyone who gave us full support for all the activities that we organised.

This year, we saw new faces being elected as the new committee members of AKYUEM. With Mr Ikmal Hisham as our new president, we hope that AKYUEM can go a lot further than before to be one of the prestigious alumni associations in Malaysia.

Firstly, we have to understand the structure of AKYUEM itself. AKYUEM is divided into two main committees; the UK or the Main Committee, and the Subcommittee in Malaysia. Currently, three batches of AKYUEM has graduated and already working in Malaysia, and another three batches are still in UK. As the number of graduating batches increase, the Main Committee will be transferred to Malaysia. Therefore, the current Main Committee is very important to guarantee smooth transitional process.

Among the events that we organised this year was the annual AKYUEM Konvoi, held on the 10th of September 2005. The original date for the Konvoi was actually 2-4 August, however, due to unforeseen circumstances (haze), the Konvoi had to be postponed and changed to a one-day event.

The highlight of the Konvoi, besides the AGM was Rog Cup: AKYUEM Annual Inter-batch Football Tournament. It was the brainchild of Mr Iliyas Jamil and Mr Tg Iedil. Sponsored by Pn Rog herself, the tournament was a success with the 2nd Batch as the inaugural winner.

The year 2006 will see a new direction for AKYUEM under the helm of Mr Ikmal Hisham. Instead of going with the flow, we will be more aggressive in our actions. We have identified certain areas that need improvements and planned the actions that need to be taken.

Activities

Besides the AKYUEM Konvoi, we don’t seem to have any other activities. Even if we have gathering, it usually were held in London, and only Londoners attend the function. Therefore, AKYUEM has decided to organise a gathering of all the AKYUEM members in the UK where everybody can come and enjoy. We call it AKYUEM Fest. This year, the gathering will be in Southampton. The date and activities will be confirmed later. Always keep updated by visiting the AKYUEM Blog.

We have also decided that AKYUEM Konvoi will always be held on the first weekend of August every year. So people, please remember this and always make yourself free on the weekend. This year’s Konvoi will be a great one. We have the 2nd Edition of Rog Cup, Gol & Gincu Special for the ladies and much more.

Membership & Financial

Currently, we accept everybody that has studied in AKYUEM as our members. However, things will have to change this year. Starting from AKYUEM Konvoi 2006, we will have proper membership system. This is to ensure that only the registered members will get the privilege of voting and other benefits. Furthermore, we will charge a registration fee for anybody to be a registered member. This way, we can improve our financial situation. As for annual fee, we haven’t decided on anything yet. Maybe in a few more years, we will implement the annual membership fee scheme. Right now, the members will only have to pay for registration fee (we haven’s decided on the amount yet).

Constitution and Organisation

Some of the things on the constitution might have to be changed to better suit the association. The main change would be from the organisational structure. We might have to drop certain posts and add new ones. We would also like to assign specific portfolios for the committee members.

Others

A sub-committee comprising the President and the VPs is in the process of drafting a 5 year plan for the association. The draft will be presented in the AGM later. Any ideas, please do not hesitate to contact the President or the VPs.

There were also several things that need to be done. For example, our association needs a logo. This will help to develop AKYUEM brand.

In 2008, the college will celebrate its 10th year anniversary. Therefore, the planning process will need to start now.

I wish every one of us all the best in your future endeavors. Thank you.

Iliyas Jamil (Topaz ’04)
Vice President

Budak KMYS Kampung?

Greetings to all...

This issue was raised in our 5th Batch gathering recently. We want to break the tradition of organizing every activity in London. After much consideration, we choose Southampton as the venue for the festival in 2006. Why? Because:

1. Not that far from London
2. Many alumni are currently studying there, meaning more workforce. hehehe

It will be a one day event. We would like to finish the event by the early evening, so that people living far from Southampton could catch their buses or trains. The activities for that day are roughly as follows (we haven’t decide the exact timing for the activities yet):

1. Inter-house football match. Each houses must consists of players from at least 2 different batches. 5 a side.
2. Sukaneka – Simple sukaneka. We will try to include tug of war and arm wrestling for both male and female category
3. North vs South volleyball match. The north will be Topaz and Garnet, while the south will be Sapphire and Diamond (this is according to the chalets or ‘kampung’ position in the college). Male and female.

After that, there will be a break (solat, nak bersiap) before our late lunch. The late lunch will be held in a hall at around 3 pm. There will be speech from the president, prize giving and several performances. The performers will be amongst the alumni. We will also decide the venue for the AKYUEM Fest 2007.

That's all for the introduction. The tentative is not finalised yet. Ex-college people all the way from Southampton to York turned up for this historic event. As expected the now unleashed students from the jungle of KYUEM found London rather fascinating, whereby every puddle of water or bush, or even a small bench facing the pond become hotspots to take ridiculously embarrassing picture. We gathered at Malaysia Hall around 9 a.m., and then spent half of the day walking around Hyde Park, which brought back memories of Lembah Beringin. Then the bunch of us went off to Nahar guided by the ever helpful London people.

About 30 of us gathered in front of Nahar just before 2 p.m. waiting for the doors to open, which unsurprisingly didn’t happen on time. By the time the doors opened it was about 2.40 p.m. and everyone started queuing up (along with non-KYUEM people who came for the free food).

The sitting around, eating and ‘lepakking’ kind of brought back the memories of the old café. Of course the picture taking session still didn’t end by then. At about 4 we all left and went our separate ways, some going to Oxford Street for shopping and some went for sight-seeing of London. All in all the gathering was a good fun and brought back memories of the good old days.

Mukrish (Topaz '05)

AKYUEM Konvoi 2005

On the 10th September 2005, we had a very successful alumni weekend (or should we say ‘alumni day’). The alumni weekend was supposed to be held on 2nd-4th August, however due to unforeseen circumstances (disastrous haze), it had to be postponed. Nevertheless, it was a successful event despite the fact that there were students who have already returned to the UK.

Below is the itinerary prepared for the day;

0900 : Rog Cup Football Tournament
- Preliminaries
1100 : AKYUEM Annual General Meeting (Great Hall)
1300 : Lunch & Zuhur Prayers
1400 : University Talk (Great Hall)
1630 : Asar Prayers
1700 : Rog Cup Football Tournament (Continued)
- Exhibition Match – Gol & Gincu Special
- Finals
- Prize Giving Ceremony
1930 : Maghrib Prayers
2100 : Dinner (Dining Hall)

Rog Cup – The 1st Annual Inter-Batch Football Tournament

The first edition Rog Cup was organised by batch 02/04; with the credits going to Iliyas Jamil, Tengku Iedil & their organising committee. There were eight teams altogether; 2nd Batch, 4th Batch (2 teams), 5th Batch (2 teams), 6th Batch, KYUEM staff and one invitational team. Even though the match started a bit late behind schedule, the tournament went fortunately smooth without any complications.

However, since the college field is under construction, the games were then moved into the Multi-Purpose Hall, ending up becoming a 5 a-side ‘futsal’ tournament.

The teams were divided into two groups. The top two teams for each group advanced to the winners’ pool and the two bottom teams went to the losers’ pool. The pool stages were played on the knock-out basis.

The group stages were played in the morning and the knock-out stages were played in the afternoon. Before the finals, we had a specially arranged exhibition match called ‘Gol & Gincu Special’. The match was between the alumni team, consisted of the girls from the 5th Batch and the present students’ team from KYUEM. As expected, the match was quite entertaining given that most of the players have never even touched a football! Nonetheless, the single match went well with the present students’ team emerging as winners.

The final of the losers’ pool were played after that. The match between the KYUEM staff and the guest team resulted in the guest team winning the losers’ pool cup. The final of the winners’ pool that will determine the first team to ever win the Rog Cup was between the 2nd Batch and the 4th Batch. The game was very close and the results have to be decided with penalty shoot-outs. Despite being the more superior team, the 4th Batch failed to stop Muiz and his 2nd Batch team from winning the match. The 2nd Batch was the first winner of Rog Cup : The Annual Inter-Batch Football Tournament.

The prizes were presented by Puan Rogayah herself and our former alumni president, Nik Nazmi. It was hoped that this tournament would be a permanent event for future alumni gatherings.

The final match.. 2nd Batch vs 4th Batch

[muka referee terpaksa dikaburkan kerana sbb2 tertentu]

The official pennant... with models wannabes posing konon ayu...

AKYUEM Annual General Meeting

After completing the morning session of the football tournament, the alumni members proceeded to the great hall for the Annual General Meeting. The meeting was basically held to welcome everyone to the alumni and also to elect a new committee for the coming year.

Nik Nazmi chaired the meeting along with Irfan Hashim (former vice-president) and Azeem Ezani (former treasurer). Nik Nazmi also delivered a speech, sharing his views on the future path of the alumni and also about the idea of producing the alumni magazine which, unfortunately could not be realised because of financial difficulties. We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the former alumni committee members for a job well done and especially to Nik Nazmi for his success in leading the committee for two years in a row. It was hoped that the new committee could match the success of the previous one or perhaps do better.

Below is the list of the newly elected alumni committee:

President
Mohd. Ikmal Hisham
Vice President
(1) Iliyas Jamil
(2) Nun Zameera
Secretary
(1) Natrina Majid
(2) Nik Ahmed Asraf Nik Othman
Treasurer
(1) Khalid Mohd. Noor
(2) Nizatul Laili
Committee
(1) Imran Yusoff
(2) Mohd. Shahmeen
(3) Tengku Iedil
(4) Aida Hazrina

University Talk

Following lunch & Zuhur prayers, everyone then gathered in the Great Hall, including the present students of KYUEM for the University Talk. The session started of with a forum. There were five speakers, all representing the alumni members, led by Nik Nazmi. It was meant to benefit the current students about the realities of studying in the UK. They were also given the opportunity to ask questions or perhaps ‘survivor skills’ that are required. Most of the speakers have had three years minimum experience of living in the UK and thus, fully knowledgeable about studying abroad.

There was an interesting debate in the middle of the forum about the difference between studying in London and elsewhere. Compelling views were exchanged but overall there were no winners, as it was finally accepted that the students themselves should decide what’s best for them.

As if the forum was not enough, there was a university talk afterwards to provide even more information to the students about specific universities in the UK. The alumni members were positioned in individual booths according to their respective universities to allow easy access for the current students to ask detailed questions about the university. The session lasted for one hour after which, the alumni members precede to the Multi-purpose hall for the continuation of the Rog Cup Football Tournament.

The alumni members were very pleased about the overwhelming response by the current students of the college. It is with anticipation that all the information provided during the session would be helpful for them to determine their choice of university later on during the application process.

The College

Basically, the college still looks the same despite some minor changes like the availability of pure entertainment (ASTRO!!!) in the café and the renovation of the field which is to be installed with sprinklers. Other than that, there was also an upgrade in the college’s internet system by adapting to wireless internet connection. It was supposed to overcome the ever-occurring problems the former students had during their time in college. However, according to the current students, there is still a ‘lot’ of room for improvements. In regards to the teaching staffs, there were some new faces but there were also a few who moved on.

All in all, it was a successful event. Special thanks to the organizing committee and everyone who participated in making this event possible. We would also like to thank all the teachers and staffs for making this day a success. We hope that next year would hold another successful alumni event.

AKYUEM Blog launched

Assalamualaikum & hi....

This blog is an initiative by the new committee of AKYUEM to update people on the news and happenings of the association.
