Alumni Kolej Yayasan UEM (AKYUEM) was originally established as Alumni Kolej Matrikulasi Yayasan Saad (AKMATYS) on 24 August 2001. The founding President was Shahrul Mizan Md. Salleh, who was previously the founding President of the KMYS Student Council. AKMATYS was established to promote networking among the students of the college, which was established in 1998, and had its first graduates in the year 2000. The graduates furthered their studies in Malaysia, the UK, Ireland, the US and Australia, among other countries.
In the first year, AKMATYS organised a Ramadhan 'iftar' or breaking of fast in Malaysia Hall London, as well as the traditional Alumni Konvoi. The Konvoi is when former students return to the college to interact with present students, as well as meet up old friends, teachers and staff. Another iftar was organised at the end of 2002, again, in Malaysia Hall London. AKMATYS too supported the sports teams during several student games in the UK.
In summer 2003, the bulk of the founding members of AKMATYS graduated. During the AGM held in the middle of the Konvoi, a new committee was selected, consisting of the 2001 and 2002 graduates of KMYS. The new President was Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad. A separate Malaysian subcommittee was formed to explore the possibility of registering the society. Their work however had to wait for the new name of the college.
Breaking from tradition, the new committee had an AKMATYS 'Makan' event organised in Mawar Restaurant, London, in January 2004 which saw nearly 60 students from the class of 2001, 2002, 2003 and even a present student (who was in the UK for an interview) attending the luncheon. AKMATYS also sponsored two pages in the class of 2004 yearbook, both as a sign of support as well as promoting AKMATYS to the future graduates of KMYS.
In summer 2004, again the AGM took place during the Konvoi. The bulk of the committee changed, mostly with the graduates from the class of 2003. Nik Nazmi however remained as President. The AGM, by two thirds majority ratified an amendment in the Constitution which established Alumni Kolej Yayasan UEM (or AKYUEM) as the new name of the organisation. The President also made a challenge to the future leadership of AKYUEM to make AKYUEM just as good and as strong as the more established ex-student associations within the next ten years. In October 2004, akyuem.org was launched.
The committee changed hands in the AGM in 2005. Mohd Ikmal Hisham Zulkarnain was elected as the new President. All the new committee members were from the 2004 batch. The Rog Cup, an inter-batch football tournament was introduced during the Alumni Konvoi. The inaugural event was won by the 2nd Batch. This tournament will be an annual event starting from 2005.
The year 2006 will be a very interesting year. With the new highly spirited committee, we are hoping that AKYUEM can reach new heights since its formation. AKYUEM will hold the largest gathering ever in the UK. The event, named AKYUEM Festival will be held in Southampton on the 1st of April 2006. This year will also be the year that AKYUEM finally fulfill its target of publishing a magazine. Although we will only be able to publish only one for this year, it is hoped that this effort will be continuous in the future.
At such a young age, it is undoubted that AKYUEM has achieved a lot. It has provided a platform for networking and participation among its members, and has an optimistic vision for the future, where the number of graduating students from KYUEM increases.
